Brantano History

Brantano starts life as a family run business in Lede, East Flanders, specialising in making Ladies shoes. A small factory shop was later opened and the foundations of the Brantano chain of stores began.

Manufacturing was halted due to increase competition from Italy and the entire factory was transformed into a shoe shop. By 1993 a further 55 stores had opened.

Brantano entered the UK market by purchasing 47 Shoe City stores from British Shoe Corporation and boosted its turnover by 60%.

Further expansion takes place in the UK when Brantano purchase 27 stores from the famous Brunswick Warehouse footwear chain.

Brantano launch its first shopping web site and with continued investment over the last years brantano now have over 120 stores across the uk.

Brantano join forces with Tommy’s baby charity to help raise funds for research into pregnancy problems and helping save babies lives through their New for Old Campaigns. Brantano was bought by the Macintosh Retail Group which has over 1150 stores in Living, Fashion, Automotive sectors across the Netherlands, Belgium, France and the UK.

Further investment is made with the refit of over 15 stores giving them a fresher and modern look with wooden floors and improved lighting.

In the first half of 2011 further investment was made and another 30 stores were refitted and 5 new stores opened bringing the total stores to over 145.

Today, Brantano continues to grow with more new stores and refits planned. With the acquisition of Jones Bootmaker at the beginning of 2011 the Macintosh Retail Group continues its expansion in the UK.
