Dawn's Success Story

Dawn Surtees – Trainee Loss Prevention Officer

I have been employed by Brantano for 14 years since the take over from Shoe City so all in all I have 23 years service. I started on a Youth Training Scheme for 2 years, after which I was kept on for my first position as a 12 hour part-time Sales Assistant, that was soon increased to a key holder and a Supervisory position as I gained more experience. I had always wanted to be in fashion retail and one day to become a successful Store Manager, running and managing a large store. With personal development plans in place and regular consultation with HR and Regional Managers, this soon happened. Along with being a Manager of a top 21 store, I also took on extra responsibilities, including becoming the Regional Managers 2nd in command and a Loss Prevention Representative. More recently I have also been a Project Manager on store refits within the company. The opportunities that have been open to me have been immense.

As a store manager for the past 10 years, everyday has a different challenge, hitting KPI targets, making commercial decisions, increasing footfall, managing costs, staff recruitment and development whilst delivering an exceptional customer experience to name a few. Planning and prioritising is key in this role and you have to be well organised. What I like most about the job is seeing all your hard work and efforts come together, the tills are ringing and the store is full of customers and the buzz you and the team get is sometimes overwhelming.

I have literally grown up with Brantano, they are like my second family and I couldn’t imagine working for any other retailer. Brantano is all about being committed; it’s hard work but definitely worth it. Things don’t happen overnight but be patient and put in the ground work first. I have come a long way since my Youth Training Scheme days, and I have just been promoted yet again and now work within the Loss Prevention department, training to become a Loss Prevention Officer, which I am really excited about! My personal motto is “Never Give Up”, Vicky my HR officer used to always say to me “Dawn, bide your time it will happen” and she has been right every time!
