Start-rite Kids Fitting

Start-rite, believe it's really important to measure a child's feet accurately before buying them every pair of shoes. That's because ill-fitting shoes can have a serious impact on your child's foot health for years to come. To be sure that your child is wearing shoes that fit properly, you can either visit one of the Brantano stores, where trained staff will measure and fit your child with shoes, or if that's not convenient, use one of our specially developed fitting gauges to help you measure your child's feet at home.

Choosing your gauge
The small gauge is suitable for shoe sizes 2 to 8½ and the large gauge is suitable for children with shoe sizes 9 to 12.

Small Gauge - Sizes 2 to 8½

  1. Sit your child on an adult's knee
  2. Hold the Start-rite gauge in your left hand
  3. Place the foot in the gauge holding the heel firmly against the back of the gauge with the left hand and ensure that the toes are lying flat on the gauge
  4. Push the length slider forward so that it rests lightly against the longest toe
  5. Holding the length slider in place, remove the foot and make a note of the length measurement indicated in front of the slider
  6. Take the tape measure provided and wrap it around the foot diagonally from the big toe joint to the little toe joint (the widest part of the foot)
  7. Pull the tape gently to take up any slack and make a note of the width measurement, indicated by the tape's marker
  8. Repeat steps 1 to 7 for the other foot as feet often vary in size
  9. Take the width measurement of the widest foot and the length measurement of the longest foot and use the tables below to calculate the shoe size for your child.
